Course Number: WL311/WL312
Typical Grade Level: 11-12

Brief Description

Spanish Film, Literature and Culture (Honors) is conducted exclusively in Spanish, and is designed for students who have successfully completed AP Spanish Language and Culture. This course is designed to engage students in the exploration of various cultural and social topics through the study of Latin American, Latinx, and Spanish film as well as literature. Topics in this class aim to guide students in the development of communication skills in all three modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational). Spanish Film, Literature and Culture (Honors) seeks to build on thematic knowledge, cultural competency, collaborative skills, and textual and film analysis. Through the study of Latin American, Spanish and Latinx literary works, films, and other media in their historical context, students make cultural comparisons, develop critical thinking skills and sophisticated expression in the target language. In the process of their viewing, reading and discussions, students will gain insight into the cultures, histories and perspectives of the Spanish speaking world and their relationship to their own culture. The course is structured around six themes. For each major theme, students will explore the various topics through essential questions that serve to engage students in cultural competency and inquiry.
