This course is an integrated language arts program designed to provide Spanish speaking LEP students with cognitive academic language proficiencies through instruction in reading and writing skills in the Spanish language using a whole language approach. Emphasis will be placed on the development and refinement of critical thinking skills. Students will develop self-confidence and self-esteem in the native language environment while developing higher level cognitive skills, and developing a positive perspective about Spanish and its role as an integral part of his/her cultural identity. This course ultimately will enable students to more effectively transition to an English environment.
