Course Number: WL271/WL272
Typical Grade Level: 9-12

Brief Description

Spanish 100 is an integrated language arts program designed to provide Spanish speaking students with limited formal education (SLIFE) the essential basic skills of the Spanish alphabet, phonological awareness and print knowledge that provide the foundation for learning to read and write in Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on syllable segmentation and blending, phonological awareness, as well as initial phoneme matching. Instructional practices will include initial and final sound and phoneme identification placement. Students will also learn to develop self-confidence and self-esteem in the native language environment while developing higher level cognitive skills. Students in the program will develop a positive perspective about Spanish and its role as an integral part of their cultural identity. In addition, this course will guide students’ acculturation to the school system in the United States. While the focus of the program is Spanish literacy development, this will enable students to transfer the skills learned in Spanish to support learning English. In turn, English language development will facilitate the transition to the regular instructional program, prepare students to graduate with a high school diploma, and provide options for future endeavors.
