Piano 2 (CP)

Course Number: A351/A352
Typical Grade Level: 10-12

Brief Description

Laying the groundwork for continued development as a pianist, Piano 2 begins with a review of the solid musical foundation set in Piano 1. A general review of topics will include treble and bass clefs, time signatures, key signatures, hand positioning, fingering, technical warm ups (e.g. Hanon), beginning scales, elements of music notation, dynamics, Circle of Fifths, and harmonic/melodic intervals.
Each Unit will build on the previous, often revisiting topics in lectures, class discussions, small group collaborative, and in a one-on-one lesson format.

Students will continue to refine the skills required to analyze, evaluate, create, produce, and perform intermediate musical pieces while developing a deeper understanding of the multiple cultural and social meanings inherent in these creative works through the study and research of music theory and history.

Students will further develop ear training skills through performance and rhythmic dictation and sight reading skills at an intermediate level. Regular playing tests will assess progress in technique and style.

Class lectures will include a more in depth study of music theory including Major and minor scale degrees, the chromatic scale, first and second inversions, two part harmony, and diminished and augmented triads.

Students will continue their aesthetic appreciation of music, through participation in and observation of student performances, and attendance and observation of a variety of music performances.

A Spring Class Recital will serve as the culmination of an understanding of the piano, through the direct application of technical skills, music theory and knowledge. Respective of the challenge of the varying levels of “intermediate,” students will select and perform a piano work from educator designed supplementary materials (e.g. sheet music, music literature books), that may include sonatinas, etudes, toccatas, inventions, and works of composers from the various periods of music.
