Piano 1 (CP)

Course Number: A331/A332
Typical Grade Level: 9

Brief Description

Throughout history, music has existed as a means of expression of feelings, ideas, or experiences performed through a variety of instruments. This course is designed to introduce students to music as an art form, by learning to play the piano. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of classical and contemporary works for the keyboard, will develop technical skills, and a solid foundation in music theory. Students will also analyze and evaluate, verbally and in writing, supporting tools including recordings, student and professional performances, musical equipment (e.g. electronic keyboards, headphones, pedals, and amplifiers) and peripheral technology used in the piano lab and on stage during rehearsals/performances (e.g. microphones, public address systems, computers, tablets, and cell phone applications). Students will work individually, in pairs, and larger ensembles, analyze the different dynamics of practice and performance, alike. Each Unit will build on the previous, often revisiting topics, such as listening, theory, interpretation, and use of technology, throughout the year.
