Brief Description

This course explores the construction of culture and the uses of folklore and mythology in J.K
Rowling’s Harry Potter series. In this course, we will explore a range of topics, themes, and issues in
Harry Potter, with special focus themes as they are developed and enacted in the books, films, and in
fan responses. In addition to enjoyment and appreciation, the course will focus on developing a deeper
understanding of, as well as critical and literary analysis of the Harry Potter phenomenon. The central
purpose of this English course/program is to encourage students to expand on their critical reading
skills through the study of high interest reading material. By encouraging students to engage in critical
reading of both the Harry Potter novels as well criticism of the works, students will build on skills that
will enable them to be more successful in their academic courses.
