Functional Mathematics

Initial Grade Level: 9-12

This course targets high school, 9-12 grade, students with moderate to severe disabilities participating in the District Alternate Curriculum and testing using the California Alternate Assessment (CAA). The course of study aligns functional skills with modified California state standards. This course promotes the continued development and practical application of basic mathematical skills. It emphasizes those skills a student needs to function more independently in the home, community, or vocational environment.

Using the Unique Learning system curriculum, students will focus on math skills in relation to Counting and Cardinality, Numbers and Operations, Fractions, Time, Money, Measurement, Data, and Graphing, Geometry, Algebra, Functions, Ratios, and Proportional Relationships. The curriculum also embeds skills in English language arts, English Language Development, History, and science.
