Brief Description

French 1 is a beginning course that develops the four communication skills of listening, speaking, reading
and writing. The class emphasizes the teaching of skills required for effective communication at the
beginning level, including grammatical structures, high frequency vocabulary, correct pronunciation and intonation.
Oral and written activities, both with partners and in small groups, provide practice to develop these skills. Teachers
engage students through differentiation. Teachers use a variety of materials and technology, such as textbooks,
videos, documents, realia, audio materials, online language websites and computer software programs. Students also
learn about French history and culture. They acquire an appreciation of various francophone cultures and foster
global awareness. The class is conducted mostly in French.
