Foundations of Alg (CP)

Course Number: M041/M042
Initial Grade Level: 9

The fundamental purposes of the Foundations of Algebra course are to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades, and to put students on a college and career pathway of advanced math courses. This course includes standards from the conceptual categories of Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Statistics & Probability, and Geometry. The objective of the course is to strengthen students’ general mathematical and algebraic understanding. There is a shift toward applying mathematical concepts and skills in the context of authentic problems and student understanding of concepts rather than merely following a sequence of procedures.Through a balanced instructional approach of collaborative and independent work, students will think critically in a mathematical way when solving problems and with an understanding that there are many different solution pathways and sometimes more than one right answer. Focus will be on estimating and computing efficiently, using appropriate tools, forming concrete models and a variety of representations, and conducting investigations and recording findings. An example of the applications shift is learning of an algebra based computer science coding. Moreover, the course will use Jo Boaler’s youcubed lessons to provide open, thorough mathematics experiences that intend to inspire creative thinking and a growth mindset so students will start seeing mathematics as a beautiful, open, creative, and multi-dimensional subject.
