Brief Description

Students will view, discuss, and write about films in a literary fashion. Students will also read literary and expository text that connects with the films. In addition, students will read Shakespeare and witness how he constructed his plays with many of the same attributes as the films. Students will be taught to read film using literary devices such as motif, juxtaposition, allusion, archetype, foil, equivocation, ambiguity, the Big Mac theory, satire, parody, nuance, pathos and ethos. In addition, Symbolism, theme, social and historical context, bias and points of view. Plot development and character development will also be analyzed. They will also write key film quotes and concepts to write comprehensive literary analyses of the films seen throughout the year. There are in-class exams as well as analytical writing assignments throughout the year. Students will study more in depth the variety of genres of film including the Silent Era, Musicals, the Black List era, Comedies, Westerns and the Blockbuster. Students will study, in depth, various film styles, genres, and theories of the old Studio System, the role of race and the history of the rating system. Students will demonstrate the understanding of how film has influenced our society and connect the past to the present. Students will also choose a point of interest in film history to research and do oral and written reports.
