Course Number: E141/E142
Typical Grade Level: 12

Brief Description

English 4 is a rigorous college preparatory course designed to foster student success in college.
Students read novels, short stories, drama, poetry, and non-fiction works, with an emphasis on
European literature, particularly British. They also conduct and participate in in-depth discussions of
those selected texts, as well as compose well-written analytical responses to literature. In addition,
students will be asked to respond extemporaneously to literature to strengthen their writing and
reading comprehension skills, arming each student with the tools needed to succeed. The curriculum
emphasizes advanced critical analysis and interpretation to promote complex arguments (both written
and verbal) about in-class reading. Writing assignments, formal and informal, will promote the stages
of composing a well written text and evidence based argument including: pre-writing, drafting, and
revising. This writing instruction will allow students to express complex ideas clearly and correctly in
a mature fashion. Students will leave the class with a clearer understanding of different aspects of
Britain and Europe’s cultural past, present, and its influence on modern times and traditions.
