Brief Description

The purpose of the class is to help students who are reading between the 6.0-8.0 grade levels to
improve their English language arts skills to a grade 11/12 level by focusing on the grade 11/12
Language Arts Content Standards, while simultaneously infusing writing, vocabulary, and grammar
skills. Using the adopted textbooks and selected core literature titles, students will learn the
fundamental language arts content strands of Reading, Writing, Written and Oral Language
Conventions, and Speaking and Listening.
In preparation for achievement on the state assessments such as the CSTs, and college preparation
assessments such as the PSAT, and SAT, students will develop their skills in the following areas:
grammar, vocabulary and concept development, reading comprehension of literature, informational,
non-fiction text, critical analysis of text, literary response and analysis writing to improve reading,
writing styles, writing application, speaking and listening, and fluency in oral and silent reading.
Expository reading and writing skills will be addressed. Thinking skills, study skills, and CTE
Foundation skills, along with reading for pleasure and personal interest will also be addressed.
