AVID Advanced Tutor

Brief Description

The AVID Advanced Tutor prepares juniors and seniors to tutor-mentor their peers in an academic setting with the emphasis on analytical writing, preparation for college entrance and placement exams, college study skill and test taking, oral language development, Cornell note-taking, development of higher order thinking skills through levels of questioning development, research skills, and content curriculum acquisition. All tutors will receive the 16 hours of required AVID tutor training throughout the semester and will become AVID certified tutors. Under the direct supervision of the AVID teacher, tutors will assist students individually and in small groups. They will conduct brainstorming sessions for essay prewrites and lead discussions and analyses of academic subjects in which students are enrolled. Tutors will also help lead Socratic Seminars, a critical part of the AVID curriculum. Other responsibilities include evaluating student binders for organization and content and assisting students with other school-related matters.
