Brief Description

AVID 9 EL is the first year of a two-year course designed explicitly for the Long-Term English Learner (LTEL). This course includes the study and development of skills in the areas of foundational literacy, academics, life, and preparation for college. The purpose of this course is to provide the LTEL with the academic language and abilities necessary to be successful in all academic subjects, to develop study skills, and to be successful in mainstream English classes.
In preparation for achievement on the state assessments such as the CAASPP, and college preparation assessments such as the ACT Aspire, PSAT, SAT and ACT students will develop their academic and language skills in the following areas: grammar, vocabulary and concept development, reading comprehension of literature, informational, non-fiction text, critical analysis of text, literary response and analysis writing to improve reading, writing styles and application, speaking and listening; and fluency in oral and silent reading.
