AVID 100 (CP)

Course Number: G531/2
Typical Grade Level: 9-12

Brief Description

AVID 100 is a course to support current and newly enrolled ELD and SLIFE students to develop and bridge the skills gap to succeed in any high school course. Students who are successful in this course can then transition to AVID 9 EL to continue developing skills in the first year of a two-year course designed explicitly for the Long-Term English Learner (LTEL). This course includes studying and developing 21st century skills to build community, strategies for success, oral communication and collaborative group practices, critical reading strategies, and the writing process.

All these instructional strategies should be spiraled through the year to support current and any newly enrolled students in the course, as SLIFE and ELD students will enroll in our schools at any given time of the year. Units are not covered sequentially; however, teachers must scaffold skills one at a time to meet the needs of the students to demonstrate mastery. As students show mastery, skills can be combined in lessons and activities. Teachers should have time to cover all four units by the end of the academic year.

In preparation for achievement on the state assessments such as ELPAC and CAASPP, and college preparation assessments such as the ACT Aspire, PSAT, SAT, and ACT, students will develop their academic and language skills in the following areas: grammar, vocabulary, and concept development, reading comprehension of literature, informational, non-fiction text, critical analysis of text, literary response and analysis writing to improve reading, writing styles, and application, speaking and listening; and fluency in oral and silent reading.
