AP Chemistry

Course Number: S081/S082
Typical Grade Level: 11

Brief Description

This is a laboratory course acceptable for UC admissions requirements and also prepares students desiring to take the AP exam in chemistry. Advanced Placement Chemistry utilizes (in addition to the California state standards) the nationwide curriculum set forth by the College Board. The AP Chemistry course is more intensive and analytic than the regular high school chemistry course. Strong emphasis is placed on solving a variety of challenging problems and there is emphasis on analysis in the laboratory as well as in the classroom. Students are strongly encouraged to take AP exam in Chemistry. The course gives an understanding of the composition and the chemical properties of matter. Atomic theory is developed in an historical context with emphasis on its mathematical aspects. Laboratory work is an integral part of coursework. The intensive mathematical approach, the fast pace of content presentation, and the breadth and depth of material covered limit students in this course to those who are Honors/AP students with demonstrated ability in algebra.
