Brief Description

The purpose of this course is to explore and develop an understanding of the role and contributions of African Americans to the growth of the United States. This course offers opportunities to explore black identity through nuanced narratives. Using primary sources, scholarly articles and analysis students will explore fundamental questions centered on the humanity and lived experiences of African Americans. What are the legacies of the Black Diaspora? Who is considered black or African American? How did enslavement undermine democratic principles? How do the cultural expressions of African Americans define society? How did sports provide a source of pride? While acknowledging the shared experiences of diasporic people, this course aims to teach Black histories that recognize Black humanity.
