Brief Description

The purpose of this course is to develop English Language Development skills and move students from the Emerging level to the Expanding level on the English Language Development Continuum according to the California English Language Development Framework. The course will provide students with protected Designated English Language Development and access to the Core Curriculum. Academic English 102 is an intermediate stage course for non-native English language learners who have approached the intermediate level. Students who complete the course successfully are prepared for successful participation in college preparatory classes. Each unit is centered on a theme selected to engage students and relate to additional content classes. The course focuses on the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, with critical thinking skills also receiving attention. Students develop vocabulary necessary for both academic and non-academic contexts. Students complete writing activities that define, classify, describe, compare, contrast, and persuade, and which address all aspects of the writing process, brainstorming, planning, drafting, peer reviewing, and revising.
